CFD simulations of pool fires in crude oil tank farm and the emergency response study

Abstract: Different pool fire scenarios of a crude oil tank farm are simulated by CFD fire modelling tool KFX. Sizes of pool fire areas are calculated based on different leak hole sizes. Wind directions, wind speeds and the tank farm geometry characteristics are taken into consideration in the study. The effect distances of different heat radiation fluxes and the heat radiation flux received by the elements engulfed by flame are taken from the fire simulation results. The safety status and the escalation potential of various fire scenarios are assessed for the tank farm designed with applicable Chinese national standards, which provides more references for the tank farm safety design. Some practical issues of the emergency preparedness analysis are also resolved through the assessment.
